Closed Die Forging / Impression Die Forging

Closed-die forging is a process which uses forging equipment to apply pressure to a metal billet within a die. As the metal plastically deforms and fills the die cavity, a forging with the required shape, dimensions, and quality is produced.

Closed-die forging is primarily used for the high-volume production of small to medium-sized components.

  • Weight Range
Ranging from a few grams (such as precision hardware components and fasteners) to several hundred kilograms (such as large high-pressure valve bodies, marine pipe fittings, and heavy-duty crankshafts).
  • Size Limitations
Component length is typically limited to approximately 2 meters. For very large or heavy components reaching several tons such as large flanges or main shafts for offshore equipment, this equipment may not be able to provide sufficient forging force. In such cases, open-die forging or ring rolling processes are generally used.

Characteristics
  • High Dimensional Accuracy and Surface Quality
Closed-die forgings provide higher dimensional accuracy and smoother surface finish than open-die forgings.
  • Excellent Mechanical Properties
Continuous grain flow improves tensile strength, fatigue resistance, and impact toughness.
  • High Production Efficiency
Well suited for mechanized and automated, high-volume production.
  • High Material Utilization
Minimal machining allowance reduces material waste and improves raw material utilization.
